Survey of minorities aims to raise GPAs
In an effort to reduce the persistent and troubling
grade-point gap between minority and non-minority students, Oak Park
and River Forest High School has initiated a unique research project
whose results they believe will be fundamental in the kinds of program
changes and staff development forums necessary to improve student-teacher
relationships and give students of color a greater chance at academic
success.
Carl Spight: attacking the gap
Dr. Carl Spight has
been an Oak Park fixture for several decades and has been known to wear
quite a few hats--from an advocate, and past president, of APPLE (African-American
Parents for Purposeful Leadership in Education) to a lecturer on African
instruments--and even, on occasion, showing off his musical prowess.
And while Spight's first love is science, the former professor of physics
has now turned his attention to providing statistical analysis for District
200's groundbreaking study on the achievement gap--the troubling grade-point-average
gap that persists between minority and non-minority students.
