Survey of minorities aims to raise GPAs

In an effort to reduce the persistent and troubling grade-point gap between minority and non-minority students, Oak Park and River Forest High School has initiated a unique research project whose results they believe will be fundamental in the kinds of program changes and staff development forums necessary to improve student-teacher relationships and give students of color a greater chance at academic success.

Dr. Carl Spight has been an Oak Park fixture for several decades and has been known to wear quite a few hats--from an advocate, and past president, of APPLE (African-American Parents for Purposeful Leadership in Education) to a lecturer on African instruments--and even, on occasion, showing off his musical prowess. And while Spight's first love is science, the former professor of physics has now turned his attention to providing statistical analysis for District 200's groundbreaking study on the achievement gap--the troubling grade-point-average gap that persists between minority and non-minority students.
